Ten Steps To Do-it-yourself Credit Repair
Filed under: Finance
You know you want to have good credit but with several strikes against you, there are few ideas that come to mind about how to clean up your credit. You can clean up your credit easier than most people because you’ve already made the first smart move. You’ve decided to get your act together and clean up your credit and below, you’ll find ten steps to do-it-yourself credit repair.
The first thing you want to do is request a free copy of your credit report. Before it arrives, step numbers two and three are easy and you can do them anytime. Gather all of your bills together and list out who you owe. Then, make sure you have bills and statements for everyone you owe. If not, add this to your list and put an asterisk by those you owe that do not report to a credit bureau.
Fourth, when your credit report comes in, you’ll want to go over it and categorize it. List the open accounts, the delinquent accounts, those accounts in good standing and those that are open accounts that you didn’t open. You’ll want to be sure you are on top of these accounts and ready to act with your good name in mind should you need to make an inquiry.
Fifth, call up any and all open accounts that should be closed and show as a paid off account. Sixth, call up any and all creditors reporting that you didn’t know reported because you were unaware of the account. Find out if you need to write letters to have the false data removed from your account.
The seventh thing you want to do when you are taking the ten steps to do-it-yourself credit repair is write letters. Write the creditors that should be showing a paid off account and ask them to report the account as paid and write the creditors that shouldn’t be listed on your credit history in the first place. Ask them to remove it and if there is an open account with your information, insist that they close the account.
The eighth thing you’ll want to do is set up a notification to alarm you of any new activity on your credit. This way you’ll know who is pulling your credit and when they’re pulling it. Typically, you can find out quickly enough to save yourself from the debt.
Before the final act is committed, you should be aware of everything on your credit report that is false or true, delinquent or current and if you find you aren’t able to clean up your credit alone, you’ll face number ten.
Finally, make a call to a credit counselor. Discuss budgeting if you want but do make the call if you find you can’t take care of your credit issues alone. You’ll want to seek legal advice as well if you aren’t able to stop the negative reporting that you didn’t initiate on fraudulently opened accounts.
Somewhere during all of this, set up a budget. Set a daily or weekly or monthly budget but do set up one. You have to live within your means if you’ll ever survive in today’s world.
